The movement of former Texas football coaches year in and year out is always interesting. Especially with the amount of coaching staff turnover Texas had in the last decade or so, even stemming down to the assistants/positional coaches, there are plenty of former members of this staff that are now employed elsewhere.
One of the more interesting names to watch among former Longhorns assistants out there this offseason is the former Texas wide receivers coach Drew Mehringer. The former Rivals National Recruiter of the Year is currently the co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach with the Florida Atlantic Owls under head coach Willie Taggart.
According to a report from Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports on Twitter on the morning of Dec. 30, Mehringer is a top candidate to be the next tight ends coach with the Oregon Ducks in the PAC-12.
Sources: Oregon is targeting Drew Mehringer as the school’s tight end coach. Mehringer is the former OC at Rutgers with stops at Texas, Houston, FAU and off-field at Ohio State. He spent last year coaching QBs at New Mexico. He won @Rivals National Recruiter of Year in 2019.

Former Texas football assistant Drew Mehringer could join the Oregon Ducks this offseason
There aren’t many obvious connections for new Oregon head coach and former Georgia Bulldogs defensive coordinator Dan Lanning. But Lanning is trying to build out a noteworthy coaching staff with some well-known names that can excel on the recruiting trail and in player development.
Mehringer has found a lot of success as a recruiter during his college football coaching career. He had a rocky end to his run with the Longhorns, to say the very least, but he’s steadied out during his two years at Florida Atlantic.
Prior to landing the Florida Atlantic job, Mehringer was an assistant on staff under former Texas head coach Tom Herman for three years. He’s also served in various roles throughout the last decades with the likes of the Ohio State Buckeyes, Houston Cougars, Rutgers Scarlet Knights, among others.
Mehringer could wind up joining a coaching staff that also includes recent hires such as offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham and offensive line coach Adrian Klemm. Lanning was hired earlier this month as a replacement for former Oregon head coach Mario Cristobal who bolted from Eugene to take the same role with the Miami Hurricanes.
