Big 12 Football: Caleb Williams still undecided about staying at OU?
After the No. 16 ranked Oklahoma Sooners became the second Big 12 football team to get a win in the postseason on Dec. 29, it looked like we might hear more on the future of breakout freshman quarterback Caleb Williams in Norman. It was figured that Williams’ future in Norman with the Sooners could be in jeopardy after the former Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley bolted for the USC Trojans job last month.
Yet, Williams did stick it through with the Sooners in bowl season. But it still looks like Williams is undecided about his future in Norman following a double-digit Alamo Bowl win over the No. 14 ranked Oregon Ducks out of the PAC-12 on Dec. 29.
In the postgame press conference with Williams following this 47-32 win over the Ducks in the Alamo Bowl earlier this week, the former elite five-star quarterback recruit didn’t mention anything that was solidified on his future in Norman. In fact, it’s easy to get the feeling that he left the door open on his future because he could still be undecided as to where he will be in 2022.
Big 12 football breakthrough QB Caleb Williams leaves some uncertainty about his future at OU
Williams talked a lot about the “roller coaster ride” and the “ups and downs” that he’s experienced at Oklahoma this fall. And all of those “ups and downs” that he’s experienced are obviously largely impacted by the moves that Riley made this fall.
If Williams does wind up landing in the NCAA Transfer Portal this offseason, it would be expected that Riley and the Trojans will be one of the top schools pursuing his commitment. But that’s mostly speculation built around media hype at this moment.
All that I can say for sure right now is that it’s easy to get the feeling that Williams is still leaving some uncertainty about his future in Norman. It’s also easy to get the feeling that Williams isn’t going to make a decision about his future in Norman quite yet.
While I would definitely expect a decision from Williams before spring ball given the fact that he’s going to want to get acquainted with whatever offense he’s playing with by that time, that’s still just an educated guess. Williams is probably going to take his time with this decision and feel out what the market would look like for him if he were to enter the transfer portal this offseason.
Williams certainly came up with a big freshman campaign at OU. He registered nearly 2,500 total yards, 21 passing touchdowns, just four interceptions, and six rushing touchdowns. Williams also led the Big 12 this year in passer efficiency rating at 169.5.
