Nebraska gets a Crystal Ball for former Texas QB Casey Thompson
There looks to be an emerging favorite to land a commitment out of the NCAA Transfer Portal early this offseason from the former Texas football redshirt junior quarterback Casey Thompson. For about the last week or so, head coach Scott Frost and the Nebraska Cornhuskers looked to have traction with Thompson out of the transfer portal.
Nebraska was really the first program to have sustained traction it appeared with Thompson since he originally put his name in the transfer portal two weeks ago. And that traction appears to be continuing heading into the turn of the calendar year from 2021 to 2022.
The lone expert 247Sports Crystal Ball Transfer Prediction in for Thompson projects his commitment to land with the Huskers. And the lone Crystal Ball Prediction for Thompson out of the transfer portal was put in on Dec. 29.

That timeline lines up about right in terms of when the communication between the Huskers and Thompson really started to heat up.
While Nebraska was not one of the schools that sent a scholarship offer to Thompson during his recruitment out of high school, Frost was one of the coaches that had a firm relationship built with the former blue-chip recruit. And that came when Frost was still the head coach of the UCF Knights, prior to taking the same role with Nebraska.
Thompson would obviously later commit to Texas, but there looked to be some mutual interest back during his recruitment between him and Frost. Most of the smoke right now in terms of the pursuit of Thompson out of the transfer portal seems to be with Nebraska.
At this point, I would put my own bets on the Huskers to get Thompson’s commitment when it’s all said and done. Nebraska saw their starting quarterback from the last few years, senior Adrian Martinez, put his name in the transfer portal this offseason before landing in the Big 12 with the Kansas State Wildcats.
With Frost likely entering another college football season on one of the hottest seats in the entire country in 2022, it would also make sense that he gets a proven quarterback like Thompson to lead his offense.
It was assumed that the Longhorns would lose at least one of their two common starting quarterbacks from the 2021 season to the transfer portal between Thompson and sophomore Hudson Card. Thompson just became the first to actually put his name in the portal this offseason.
