Rueben Owens, RB

There is often an idea that a prospect as highly touted as the elite five-star El Campo running back Rueben Owens probably won’t re-commit to a place where he de-committed from after sticking around for a few months. But there is a feeling that it could be different for the Longhorns in pursuit of a re-commitment from the in-state product Owens.

Owens has to be considered the top running back target for the Longhorns 2023 class. And that has remained the case since before he first committed to Texas almost a year ago.

Much like it feels like the Longhorns could catch a real wave of momentum on the recruiting trail after hiring Marion as their next wide receivers coach, the new hire at running backs coach could provide some energy for the 2023 class. Texas hired the former Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets running backs coach Tashard Choice for the same role to replace the new Temple Owls head coach Stan Drayton last month.

Choice is a very energetic recruiter that has some great relationships with some top running back prospects in the 2023 recruiting class. And it appears that Owens is happy with who the Longhorns hired to replace Drayton.

There are multiple running back targets for Choice and the Longhorns 2023 class that could be drawn in by this new addition to the coaching staff. But Owens would definitely be the biggest addition (or re-commitment in his case) that the Longhorns could pull in this month of any of the top running back targets on the recruiting trail.
