3 key recruits impressed by Texas’ hire of RB coach Tashard Choice
Rueben Owens, RB
If you follow Longhorns recruiting, it is borderline impossible to not know that the elite five-star El Campo running back Rueben Owens is one of the top targets of the 2023 class. Texas once held a commitment from Owens in the 2023 class when there was a ton of momentum on the recruiting trail in the first couple of months after the Longhorns hired Sark to replace Tom Herman as the head coach.
But it also didn’t take long for Owens to re-open his recruitment after originally giving his commitment to Texas last offseason. He originally committed to Texas in February 2021. And then, he re-opened his recruitment by de-committing from Texas around four months later in June.
Texas has remained a major player in his recruitment even since, though. While it’s not too often that an elite skill position prospect such as Owens re-commits to the same spot where he de-committed early in his recruitment, it’s definitely a possibility. And the fact that Texas is trending up on the recruiting trail right now with a different running backs coach is a shake-up that could help to get Owens to eventually re-commit.
A report from Inside Texas (paid content) last week also indicates that Owens had a “big impression” made on him by the hire of Choice as the running backs coach. Drayton was doing a good job by most indications as Owens’ primary recruiter, but the energy that Choice could bring in that role might even be unmatched by the new Temple head coach.
