Texas Basketball: 3 reasons the Longhorns will dominate Kansas State
Timmy Allen can spark Texas to win the battle on the boards
Three-point shooting and rebounding are two of the biggest strengths that this Kansas State team brings to the table through a dozen games this season. Kansas State averages just shy of 38 rebounds per game this season, nearly five more than they give up. This is also one of the better defenses in the country, as the Wildcats are allowing just over 60 points per game, good for top 40 in Division 1.
Now, to actually find the effectiveness of Kansas State on the boards, you should look at the team’s total rebounding percentage on the season so far. Kansas State ranks just outside the top 100 in Division 1 in total rebounding percentage, around 52.7. Meanwhile, Texas ranks just inside the top 100 in Division 1, with a total rebounding percentage around 53.2.
This could be a close battle on the boards between Texas and Kansas State. But with the strength in numbers that the Longhorns have to win the battle on the glass, I believe this should be an edge to Texas in this game. Between the likes of Mitchell, Disu, and the senior forward duo of Timmy Allen and Christian Bishop, Texas should have more than enough depth in the frontcourt to win the battle on the boards.
Allen, in particular, is becoming one of the most efficient rebounders in the entire country this season. He still ranks in the top two in the Big 12 in offensive rebounding percentage (13.6), and in the top 15 in the NCAA.
Texas was pretty close to winning the battle on the boards with a team that is pretty strong in that department in West Virginia. There is more size and athleticism that Texas brings to the table in their frontcourt unit than Kansas State too. Kansas State also doesn’t have the size that West Virginia does in the frontcourt unit. I would imagine this bodes well for Allen and the Longhorns in this game.
