Texas basketball proves a point with double-digit win over Kansas State
It’s hard to question some of the results that new head coach Chris Beard and No. 14 ranked Texas basketball are providing out of the gates in Big 12 play this season. Texas came out in the first two games of the conference slate with a vengeance. This squad dominated head coach Bob Huggins and a short-handed West Virginia Mountaineers team by a 15-point margin over the weekend.
And then, Beard and the Longhorns were able to parlay that momentum to get to a dozen wins on the season against head coach Bruce Weber and the Kansas State Wildcats on the road on the night of Jan. 4. Texas came out a little bit sluggish against the Wildcats on Jan. 4. But it didn’t take long for Texas to get going out of the gates in the second half.
Texas went into the locker room at halftime down to Kansas State 35-29. But the Longhorns absolutely dominated the second half to the tune of a 19-point edge. This allowed the Longhorns to get this win over Kansas State in the end by the final score of 70-57.
After going into the locker room at halftime down by six points, this was a huge effort from the Longhorns in the second half.
The driving forces in this win over Kansas State for the Longhorns were four players. First and foremost, the frontcourt duo of junior power forward Dylan Disu and senior forward Timmy Allen were shining stars in this game. It just so happened that Disu did it coming off the bench and Allen with the starting unit.
Allen continued his torrid pace on the glass in this game with one of the best outings of his career in this department. He came up with a career-high 14 rebounds for his second double-double of the season. Allen also registered an impressive 17 points, three assists, one steal, no blocks, and three turnovers.
And he shot 6-of-13 from the field, missed on one attempt from beyond the arc, and was 5-of-6 from the free-throw line.
Meanwhile, Disu gave the Longhorns 10 points, five rebounds, one assist, no steals, one block, and no turnovers off the bench in 22 minutes played. And he shot 5-of-7 from the field, with no attempts from beyond the arc or the free-throw line.
Texas basketball shines in the second half in win over Kansas State
There were also big nights that the Longhorns got from their senior guard duo of Marcus Carr and Courtney Ramey. It was namely the play of Carr that has powered this Texas backcourt to get some dominant efforts in these two wins to start out conference play over Kansas State and West Virginia.
Carr came up a team-high 19 points, seven rebounds, five assists, one steal, one block, and no turnovers. And he shot 6-of-14 from the field, 3-of-9 from beyond the arc, and 4-of-6 from the free-throw line.
This was one of the most effective and well-rounded performances of the season so far for Carr. He’s also come up with 39 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists, three steals, and one block in his first two games in Big 12 play this season.
Ramey was another player that scored in the double figures for the Longhorns on this night. He was another big factor in this win over Kansas State.
The play of the quad of Allen, Disu, Ramey, and Carr was more than enough to power Texas in the second half to get this convincing double-digit win over the Wildcats. Texas now has plenty of momentum to start conference play after some questions emerged as to how this team played against ranked competition during the non-conference slate.
Texas is now sitting on a record of 12-2 (2-0 Big 12) following their 13-point win over Kansas State on the road on Jan. 4. Next up for Beard and the Longhorns is a battle with the Oklahoma State Cowboys on the road in Stillwater, OK, on Jan. 8.
