3 important 2022 recruits to watch for Texas in January
Jacoby Mathews, S
Yet another important National Signing Day decision to watch for a target of the Longhorns 2022 class is the touted five-star Ponchatoula (LA) safety Jacoby Mathews. Texas has found traction with Mathews at different points throughout his recruitment, but it never seemed like they were the true frontrunner.
Obviously, if Mathews had his sights set on committing to the Longhorns, the staff would find room for him in the 2022 class. But the fact of the matter is that it seems like it will be difficult for the Longhorns staff to land a commitment from him over the likes of the LSU Tigers, Florida, Texas A&M Aggies, and Alabama Crimson Tide.
As one of the longtime blue-chip targets of the Longhorns 2022 class, we’re truly set to see the recruitment of Mathews come down to the last day of this recruiting cycle. There is definitely the relationship that Texas has with the former LSU commit Mathews. He was on campus in Austin for an official visit back in October.
Texas is definitely in the mix among the finalist schools for Mathews ahead of his decision date next month. This does still feel like a recruitment that is LSU’s to lose. But you could make a reality for essentially every single other one of his finalists in different realities. That’s why it will be important to watch how his recruitment plays out in the next few weeks.
