Texas could soon add Gary Patterson to the coaching staff
Among the overarching storylines of the offseason thus far for new head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program is the status of discussions to potentially add the former TCU Horned Frogs’ longtime head coach Gary Patterson to this staff. In the last couple of weeks, though, the news on the front of the Texas-Patterson discussions remained pretty quiet.
This could all be changing this weekend, though.
A report from Jason Suchomel on Twitter on Jan. 7 indicates that Texas met with Patterson in Austin this week. That meeting included a tour of the football facilities and a discussion with the coaching staff. It reportedly went well and Suchomel mentioned that “Patterson is a strong candidate to join the UT staff in some capacity” in his Jan. 7 tweet.

A report from Horns247 (paid content) on Jan. 8 also indicates that this meeting between the Longhorns staff and Patterson “went well” and could go somewhere in the near future.
It’s good to hear about this movement in the discussions between Patterson and Sark. The impact he could make for Texas in terms of recruiting, game-planning, and player development could be felt right away in 2022.
If Sark and the Longhorns are able to add the former Horned Frogs bench boss to the coaching staff, the idea is that it would come in some significant defensive role. But it also sounds like it wouldn’t come in the role of a defensive coordinator to take the job of Pete Kwiatkowski and/or Jeff Choate.
What is clear is the fact that the addition of Patterson to the Longhorns coaching staff would be a massive get for Sark. Texas needs some major help on the defensive side of the ball after one of the worst seasons for this group in the modern history of the program.
Patterson wrapped up a 22-year-long run as head coach with the Horned Frogs last fall. He finished up his time as TCU’s head coach with a record of 181-79 (.696 winning percentage).
