Some of the biggest news coming out of the weekend concerning head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program comes in relation to the former TCU Horned Frogs longtime head coach Gary Patterson. Earlier this week, the Texas coaching staff apparently had a good meeting and discussion with Patterson about potentially joining the program.

The role that Patterson could get added to the Longhorns coaching staff in is likely one that would be something major on the defensive side of the ball. Short of taking the role of Pete Kwiatkowski and/or Jeff Choate as a defensive coordinator for Texas in 2022, Patterson could be one of the most notable assistants on this side of the ball.

Sark and the Longhorns staff would do really well to add someone like Patterson to the mix this offseason. Texas had one of its worst showings on defense ever as a member of the Big 12 conference in 2021. It looked like the Longhorns struggled to stop anyone last season, and the defense constantly looked disjointed at many levels.

Gary Patterson should seriously consider soon joining the Texas football staff

Adding Patterson could bring a proven defensive mind to the table for Texas that could help with game-planning and player development. The potential addition of Patterson to the coaching staff would also likely have a positive impact right away on the recruiting trail.

All in all, the idea of Texas hiring Patterson is an exciting one. And it sounds like this could be a development that is close to becoming a reality in terms of Patterson getting added to this staff.

Here’s a look at three reasons why Patterson should go ahead and pull the trigger on joining the Texas coaching staff this offseason.
