3 reasons Gary Patterson should join the Texas coaching staff
Having a say in the schematics as this defensive scheme gets much-needed adjustments
There’s no doubt in my mind that there’s still a lot of potential for the former Washington Huskies co-defensive coordinator Kwiatkowski to have some of his schemes and game-plans succeed at Texas. And with key defensive assistants such as cornerbacks coach Terry Joseph, defensive line coach Bo Davis, and safeties coach Blake Gideon doing good work at their respective spots on the recruiting trail, there could still be some brighter days ahead on this side of the ball.
Yet, Texas definitely needs to make a lot of adjustments on this side of the ball this offseason. It’s clear that Sark and this staff want Patterson to have his voice heard. And the mutual respect that seems to exist between all parties involved could make for an effective relationship if and when Patterson arrives in Austin.
Kwiatkowski has to figure out something to improve upon on this side of the ball in 2022. Doing things like giving up 49 points in regulation at home to the Kansas Jayhawks and collapsing in almost every single second half in Big 12 play are aspects of this Texas that just have to go away next fall.
As Texas goes through this process of reformulating the defensive schematics and game plans in 2022, it makes a lot of sense for Patterson to be an integral part of that foundation. Texas needs some more conducive defensive minds to finally find sustained success on this side of the ball. Adding Patterson would do just that.
