It is that time of the year where people will consistently make comments regarding the Texas football program getting overhyped for the season that lies ahead. With the 2021-22 college football season wrapping up on the night of Jan. 10 with the Georgia Bulldogs topping the Alabama Crimson Tide in a thrilling College Football Playoff National Championship Game, the offseason has officially arrived.

Granted, head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns have gone through the start of their offseason routine for more than one full month now. Texas wrapped up their season on Black Friday with a win at home over the Kansas State Wildcats.

Finishing up with a record of 5-7 (3-6 Big 12) during what was a disappointing first year at the helm as the Texas head coach for Sark, this program has a lot of work to do in 2022. Texas has to improve on both sides of the ball in a number of ways.

The good news is that the Longhorns got to work right away to try and fix some of the problem areas on each side of the ball. A good haul of signees in the 2022 recruiting class along the offensive and defensive lines should help. Not to mention the addition out of the NCAA Transfer Portal of the former Ohio State Buckeyes freshman quarterback Quinn Ewers helping to build up hype for Texas.

Texas football ranks too high in the CBS Sports way-too-early top 25 for 2022

But it does seem a bit early for the Longhorns to be making their way into some way-too-early top 25 rankings from various media outlets early this offseason. Yet, that didn’t stop CBS Sports from putting a ton of faith in the Longhorns in their way-too-early top 25 ranking for 2022.

Texas rang in at No. 16 in the way-too-early top 25 ranking from CBS Sports on Jan. 11. Here’s more on what this piece from CBS had to say about their placement of Texas in this way-too-early top 25 poll for the 2022 season.

"The Longhorns will need an entire offseason to wash the taste of a loss to Kansas, as part of a 5-7 season, out of their mouths. Steve Sarkisian gets a five-star infusion at quarterback with Quinn Ewers. Xavier Worthy is a budding star at wide receiver. Only TCU and Kansas, though, gave up more yards. Is this any way to get ready for the SEC?"

Most of the reasoning for any of the way-too-early rankings including the Longhorns will circle around the return of star junior running back Bijan Robinson and the addition of Ewers. And while that makes sense to build up the hype for next season, it seems way too confident to put Texas this far inside the top 20.

All in all, though, the way-too-early polls are often not something to take seriously. It just could make for a long offseason of what-ifs for the Longhorns instead of focusing on the meat of what needs to improve for the 2022 season.

Texas is going to be put to the test right away next season. Sark and the Longhorns have tough opposition set in the non-conference slate like that of the Crimson Tide and the UTSA Roadrunners.
