Another player that could find himself buried on the depth chart for the Longhorns soon is the former under-the-radar three-star recruit and redshirt freshman defensive tackle Sawyer Goram-Welch. The 6-foot-4 and 300-pound defensive tackle has yet to really make an impact at any point in the last two seasons for Texas.

Goram-Welch did get nearly two-dozen snaps last fall. But that was fewer than he got during his true freshman campaign in 2020. Goram-Welch barely reached 50 snaps in his first two seasons on the Forty Acres. And maybe that is just going to be the outlook for Goram-Welch heading into his third year in Austin.

Goram-Welch did at least get most of his work along the defensive line this season. The problem was that roughly 80 percent of his snaps came in garbage time for the Longhorns when they were winning games big. For example, Texas gave Goram-Welch more than half of his snaps from last season in the blowout Week 3 win over the Rice Owls.

Heading into next season, Goram-Welch is really going to be fighting an uphill battle to work his way up the depth chart. Texas signed a stellar group along the defensive front in the 2022 class. That included more than five blue-chip players that can play along the defensive line. That doesn’t sound like something that will be easy for Goram-Welch to work through in 2022.
