One of the most highly-rated targets of the 2022 Texas football recruiting class throughout this cycle was the elite five-star Cy Park linebacker, Harold Perkins. Texas made Perkins one of their top priorities throughout most of this recruiting cycle, but it didn’t really pay off in the end.

Earlier this month, Perkins officially announced his commitment to head coach Jimbo Fisher and the rival Texas A&M Aggies. But it looks like the recruitment of Perkins could still be open a few weeks ahead of National Signing Day. And this is something that Texas is going to try and take advantage of.

Perkins is set to take an official visit this weekend with new head coach Billy Napier and the Florida Gators in Gainesville. And then, it looks like there could be an official visit looming with new head coach Brian Kelly and the LSU Tigers in Baton Rouge before signing day arrives next month.

Texas football still working on communication with 5-Star A&M LB commit Harold Perkins

In all likelihood, it is Perkins just taking the rest of the visits he has available to him at this point of his recruitment. Taking visits to Florida and LSU does make sense for him given two big reasons. First and foremost, Perkins obviously has yet to sign his National Letter of Intent with Texas A&M. That is likely to come for him on National Signing Day next month.

The second reason why Perkins could be taking a couple of these visits is the fact that Florida and LSU have new coaching staffs since the start of the 2021 season.

And according to a report from Inside Texas (part of the On3 Network, paid content) on Jan. 14, Texas is still working to keep communication alive with Perkins. Texas is likely going to push this one right down to the wire as they did with the elite five-star Frisco-Liberty wide receiver and fellow Texas A&M commit Evan Stewart.

Head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns pushed with Stewart right until his signed letter of intent came in with Texas A&M during the Early Signing Period.

Honestly, it makes a lot of sense for Texas to keep pushing with Perkins until he puts pen to paper next month.

Texas currently has 27 signees and 28 total commitments in the 2022 class. It looks like the lone remaining big-time uncommitted target at this point of the cycle for the Longhorns 2022 class is the elite five-star Bowie interior offensive lineman Devon Campbell.
