ESPN mentions Steve Sarkisian among coaches on hot seat in 2022
Second-year Texas football head coach Steve Sarkisian will have a tough challenge on his hands this coming season to right the ship after a poor first year leading this program. Texas is trying to improve off a five-win season in 2022. And there is ample reason for excitement about what lies ahead in 2022 and 2023 for Sark and his squad.
Before the Longhorns faithful gets too excited, though, there needs to be a focus on the actual plan to improve the results on the field in 2022. Sark and the Longhorns are in the unenviable spot of facing a lot of pressure to find results on the field right away this coming season.
Expectations are pretty much always high on the Forty Acres. But this season is going to have a different feeling to it given how much youth will be present on the field next fall. Sark and his staff will have to figure out a way to get this offense going around recent transfer quarterback Quinn Ewers and improve the defense simultaneously.
Texas football HC Steve Sarkisian tabbed as a name to watch potentially on the hot seat in 2022
If Sark is not able to pull that off, the pressure will really start to ratchet up on him. That was pointed out by a list on ESPN (paid content) that shows coaches to watch and those on the hot seat early on in 2022. This ESPN piece didn’t say that Sark will be on the hot seat for the Longhorns right away in 2022. But it does mention him as a name to watch this year.
Among Big 12 head coaches, Sark was actually the only one listed to be on the hot seat or a name to keep an eye on this year. This piece did mention West Virginia head coach Neal Brown as someone that was considered for the list but didn’t make it since there is likely to be more patience with his rebuild in Morgantown than there will be with Sark’s in Austin.
A lot of the fate of Sark in 2022 and 2023 will rely on how much progress he’s able to make with Ewers. The defense does need to make strides in 2022, but that is not Sark’s specialty. That is why he brought in former TCU head coach Gary Patterson as a special assistant to the head coach.
Texas finished up last season with a record of 5-7 (3-6 Big 12) following a win in the regular season finale on Black Friday over the Kansas State Wildcats. The 2022 season is set to open up on Sep. 3 at home against the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks.
