Texas QB Hudson Card looks ‘totally engaged’ in winter workouts
Winter workouts tend to be one of the more overlooked portions of the offseason, especially for the Texas football program. But it is a really interesting time to see how the culture is taking shape for second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff as they try to right the ship on the Forty Acres in 2022.
Part of righting the ship for Sark and the Longhorns will involve figuring out the quarterback situation. Granted, it looks like the starting job is Quinn Ewers’ for the taking at this point. The former Ohio State Buckeyes freshman transfer quarterback is already the talk of the town in Austin.
But there is still a quarterback for the Longhorns that has more experience than any other on the roster this offseason that a lot of fans think will transfer before summer workouts even arrive. Rising junior quarterback Hudson Card is really the only quarterback with starting experience still hanging around in Austin after former Longhorns redshirt junior Casey Thompson transferred to Nebraska.
Texas football QB Hudson Card reportedly looking “engaged” so far this month in winter workouts
Card is still going to try to show what he can do for the Longhorns’ quarterback room this offseason, despite all of the rumors that he could enter the NCAA Transfer Portal. According to a report from Horns247 on Jan. 25 (paid content), Card is still showing leadership and looking “totally engaged” in winter workouts thus far for the Longhorns.
This is good news for the Longhorns knowing that Card is at least looking engaged in winter workouts. It would be nice to have him on the roster heading into the 2022 season if nothing else. Texas would be in a bit of an unsettling position if the set-in-stone backup quarterback heading into the fall was incoming freshman and former four-star recruit Maalik Murphy.
That is nothing against Murphy, but it would be nice for Texas to have some quarterback on the roster with some significant game reps under his belt.
Card finished up the 2020 season with just under 600 passing yards, five passing touchdowns, one interception, 16 rushing yards, and one rushing score. Thompson did take more reps last fall than Card, but both did have some starts each way.
