In what looked to be one of the better efforts and results of the regular season so far for new head coach Chris Beard and his squad, newly unranked Texas basketball took down head coach Jamie Dixon and the TCU Horned Frogs on the night of Jan. 25. Texas essentially dominated this game end-to-end against TCU to move their winning streak to two games.

This was big for Beard and the Longhorns to potentially hit a point in the Big 12 slate where this team can find some real momentum. Texas has now won two straight games dating back to last weekend, coming over TCU and the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

But this win over TCU gave the Longhorns their biggest margin of victory in Big 12 play to date this season. Texas did beat the West Virginia Mountaineers by a 15-point margin in the Big 12 opener a few weeks ago.

This win over the Horned Frogs, though, came by an impressive 23 points. Texas got the win over TCU by the final score of 73-50.

Texas was spearheaded by the duo of senior forward Timmy Allen and senior guard Courtney Ramey in this win over TCU. While Ramey definitely had some poor decisions he made offensively in this game, he finished up with an efficient night by most considerations.

Ramey gave Texas 14 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field and 2-of-5 from beyond the arc. He also came up with three rebounds, two assists, two steals, no blocks, and no turnovers. The key here was the fact that Ramey didn’t turn the ball over at all.

Meanwhile, Allen gave the Longhorns a game-high 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field and a perfect 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. He also registered eight rebounds, two assists, one steal, one block, and one turnover.

Timmy Allen and Courtney Ramey combine for 30 points in a dominant win for Texas basketball over TCU

Another driving force for the Longhorns in this win over TCU was the play of some of the key bench players. Sophomore guard Devin Askew had one of his better performances of the season to date with six points and one steal on 75 percent shooting from the field.

Junior forward Brock Cunningham brought that usual gritty presence that he does to the table for the Longhorns. While Cunningham only gave the Longhorns four points off the bench, his value came in other areas of the stat sheet.

Cunningham also gave the Longhorns seven rebounds, four assists, and one steal, in just under two-dozen minutes off the bench. But these types of games are becoming more and more regular for Cunningham in the last couple of seasons.

Texas won this game as they should many more. The team utilized their deep rotation and solid defense to suffocate the Horned Frogs’ offense that has shown some potency so far this season. Texas also won the battle on the glass, putting up an impressive team offensive rebounding percentage around 46.

Allowing just 50 points to the Horned Frogs in this game shows the importance of the defense showing up for Beard and the Longhorns this season. When Texas allows fewer than 60 points so far this season, they are 15-0. That leaves them with a record of 0-5 when they allow more than 60 points thus far.

If nothing else, the goal from here on out for the Longhorns should be pretty clear. Especially when Texas is getting solid production out of key starters such as Allen and Ramey, let the defense take over and this team will be really hard to beat.
