Tensions are already taking hold as new head coach Chris Beard and No. 23 ranked Texas basketball get set to take on fellow new head coach Mark Adams and the No. 14 ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders in a must-see affair in Lubbock on the night of Feb. 1. Multiple factors are playing into these tensions, namely the past connections with Beard and the Red Raiders.

Last spring, Beard bolted from Lubbock after five seasons at the helm as Texas Tech’s head coach to take the job opening with the Longhorns to replace the departed Shaka Smart. That obviously didn’t see well with the Texas Tech faithful.

This seems like a night that Texas Tech were waiting for a long time now. Getting their shot at a top 25-ranked Longhorns team with Beard leading the way is something they are licking their chops for on this night.

Texas basketball head coach Chris Beard reportedly gets into it with Tech HC Mark Adams

And things aren’t really cooling down within an hour of tip-off. According to a report from KAMC News in Lubbock and Red Raider Nation on Twitter on the night of Feb. 1, Adams and Beard “got into some sort of confrontation at the United Supermarkets Arena” on the night before this game.

That would imply that there was some type of altercation between Beard and Adams on the night of Jan. 31 just after the Longhorns basketball team first got into Lubbock.

If this news were coming out about fans getting into an altercation in front of United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock before this game, it would make sense. But it’s not often that you hear about two head coaches getting into it before a conference game like this.

This is all making for what should be a really entertaining matchup between the Longhorns and Red Raiders in Lubbock on Feb. 1. Texas and Texas Tech are both sporting records of 16-5 heading into this huge Big 12 showdown.

If Texas can pull off the upset against Texas Tech on the road in Lubbock on Feb. 1, it would be the first loss of the season for Adams and the Red Raiders at the friendly confines of United Supermarkets Arena. That would obviously be a big feat for Beard and the Longhorns to pull off.
