Rueben Owens, RB

There was a point in time when the lone commit in the Longhorns 2023 class was the elite five-star El Campo running back Rueben Owens. Texas was looking to form a really solid foundation in the 2023 class by starting out this cycle with a commitment from Owens. Yet, Owens would wind up re-opening his recruitment a few months after giving his commitment to Texas last offseason.

Despite losing the commitment of Owens last offseason, Texas is still very much in the thick of the race to get his pledge. And it looks like Texas hiring the former Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets running backs coach Tashard Choice to replace the departed Stan Drayton has injected some energy into the pursuit of Owens early this offseason.

Choice and the Longhorns are currently sitting in the midst of a group of top schools in the race to land a commitment from Owens that also includes the likes of the Alabama Crimson Tide, Oklahoma Sooners, Georgia Bulldogs, and Texas A&M Aggies.

Yet, Texas likely did nothing but help their cause in the race to land a commitment from Owens by signing Campbell in an elite group of offensive linemen in the 2022 class. Owens has to believe that he would be running behind a really solid group of linemen that will be around on the Forty Acres for a long time after what Sark and Flood did for the 2022 recruiting cycle.

It looked like one of the major factors for Owens in his recruitment was the supporting cast he would have at his college of choice. Knowing that Texas has an elite group of offensive linemen coming in with the 2022 class, Choice and Sark should have more momentum with Owens at the moment.
