Texas ‘reconnecting’ with former 4-Star OU WR commit DeAndre Moore Jr.
It might be a while before second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff find their first offensive commit in the 2023 Texas football recruiting class. The prospects are looking good for Texas on the defensive side of the ball early on in the 2023 recruiting cycle. But Texas has more work to do to find traction soon with some of their offensive targets.
An emerging name to watch, though, for Sark and the Longhorns staff is the highly touted four-star Los Alamitos (CA) wide receiver and former Oklahoma Sooners commit DeAndre Moore Jr. Yet, Moore Jr. just de-committed from Oklahoma after the departure of former Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley.
He officially de-committed from Oklahoma on Jan. 31, 2022. So it wasn’t immediate that Moore Jr. re-opened his recruitment after Riley and most of the Oklahoma coaching staff darted from Norman to join the USC Trojans. Riley bolted from Norman for the USC job opening a few months ago.
Texas was originally one of the schools that found a good amount of traction on the recruiting trail with Moore Jr. prior to his Sep. 24 commitment to Oklahoma. Texas offered Moore Jr. back in March 2021.
Texas football reportedly “reconnecting” with 4-Star 2023 WR DeAndre Moore Jr. after de-committing from OU
At this point, there are a number of factors that could be contributing to a rejuvenated effort on the recruiting trail for the Longhorns with this talented California native wideout. The first is obviously the fact that he de-committed from Oklahoma last month.
But Texas still has some of the coaches on staff when they were recruiting Moore Jr. prior to his commitment to the Sooners last fall. Texas might even have more of a leg up now throughout the recruitment of Moore Jr. after hiring Brennan Marion to replace Andre Coleman as the wide receivers coach.
According to a report from Horns247 on Feb. 7 (paid content), Texas has found some success “reconnecting” with Moore Jr. since his de-commitment from the Sooners. Marion and Sark and putting a solid effort themselves into the pursuit of Moore Jr.
Although, it also sounds like USC will be a big threat to land Moore Jr. since he is a California native and was recruited to Riley when he was Oklahoma’s head coach. There are multiple relevant connections that he has with the Trojans at this point.
Moore Jr. is one of the higher-rated wide receivers that have an offer from the Longhorns for the 2023 class. He ranks as the nation’s No. 47 2023 high school prospect, No. 4 wide receiver, and No. 6 prospect out of California (247Sports Composite).
