3 transfer portal targets that are now on Texas’ radar
De’Rickey Wright, DB
The most recent transfer portal target emerging on the radar for the Longhorns of late is the former Vanderbilt Commodores sophomore linebacker/defensive back De’Rickey Wright. It was only back on Feb. 16 that Wright picked up an offer from the Longhorns.
This gifted and potent 6-foot-4 and 210-pound former blue-chip recruit was once committed to the Alabama Crimson Tide and then the Ole Miss Rebels before eventually signing with Vanderbilt as part of their 2020 recruiting class. That gives a certain level of familiarity with the current Texas coaching staff.
Another connection worth mentioning here is the fact that current Texas cornerbacks coach Terry Joseph was one of the top recruiters after Wright on the trail when he was on staff with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
Wright didn’t get many snaps at Vanderbilt, at least compared to what Joiner had at Western Illinois and McCaskill with Louisiana in the last few seasons. But it looks like the Texas staff is familiar with the lofty ceiling that Wright brings to the table and how good of a fit he could be for Pete Kwiatkowski on this defense.
A few of the other programs that appear to be in on the recruitment of Wright out of the portal are the Pitt Panthers and Oklahoma State Cowboys. But there could be more to come since it was only a few days since Wright first entered the portal.
This is still definitely one to watch with the Longhorns getting in on the recruitment of Wright out of the portal so soon after he put his name into the mix.
