For the last few months, there wasn’t much activity to speak of on the trail for the 2023 Texas football recruiting class and second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian. Outside of a few key visit weekends in the last couple of months, Texas had a pretty quiet run on the recruiting trail for the 2023 class during the winter months.

But that could be changing with spring ball and visits looming. Sark and the Longhorns staff could be preparing for a really important period of the recruiting calendar during spring ball. There are some visits that could soon get booked.

And one to watch for the spring could now involve the former TCU Horned Frogs commit and four-star North Mesquite wide receiver Cordale Russell. Texas is making a bigger push with Russell on the recruiting trail at the moment after a Feb. 10 de-commitment from new head coach Sonny Dykes and TCU.

Texas football reportedly looking to get former 4-Star TCU WR commit Cordale Russell booked on a visit in spring

Russell had originally followed Dykes from when he was committed to the SMU Mustangs to TCU. Dykes took over for Gary Patterson as TCU’s next full-time head coach a few months back. But it doesn’t look like the connection between Dykes and his staff and Russell is holding up anymore.

It sounds like Dykes and the Horned Frogs could still make a play to eventually land a firm commitment from Russell. But Russell’s camp will be taking their time to evaluate all options on the table in 2022.

One of the programs that look to be making a sizable move with Russell is Texas. According to a report from Inside Texas on Feb. 18 (part of the On3 Network, paid content), Texas is developing a good relationship with Russell, in an effort spearheaded by new wide receivers coach/passing game coordinator Brennan Marion.

From the sounds of it, Marion and the Longhorns are doing a good job establishing communication with Russell after he re-opened his recruitment last week. It now reportedly looks like a real possibility that Texas will get Russell on the books for a visit to Austin in the spring, which could further the momentum for Marion with this DFW blue-chip recruit.

Texas doesn’t officially have an offer out to Russell from what we’ve seen as of yet. But that should come in due time if Russell is set for a visit to Austin in the spring.

Texas currently has one commit in their 2023 class as of the early afternoon of Feb. 18. But with more activity coming for the 2023 class once the dead period lifts in a few weeks, the spring could be a busy time on the recruiting trail for the Longhorns.
