Off to a very hot start through four games at this point, No. 1 ranked Texas baseball and head coach David Pierce is really putting the hurt on their opponents out of the gates this season. Texas hit the road for the first time this season on the night of Feb. 22 to take on the 2-1 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders.

Pierce and the Longhorns gave the redshirt freshman right-hander Andre Duplantier II the call on the mound in the series opener against the Islanders. Duplantier got his first career start and definitely made the most of it.

In his first start, Duplantier gave Texas four shutout innings on the mound with three strikeouts. This was essentially a spotless game from the Texas pitchers, as they gave up no runs and just two hits in this dominant outing against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

The bats really showed up for the Longhorns too in this game. As a team, the Longhorns had 14 hits and a dozen runs. This is the third straight game where Texas put up a double-digit number of runs.

What powered Texas offensively in this game was the combination of first baseman Ivan Melendez and outfielder Austin Todd. Melendez stayed hot with his bat after hitting a couple of home runs over the weekend in this game. He gave the Longhorns two hits, two walks, three runs, and two runs batted in on three at-bats.

Meanwhile, Todd gave Texas two hits, two walks, one run, and three runs batted in on two at-bats in this win over the Islanders.

There were other solid performances for Texas in this series-opening win over the Islanders. But the combination of Todd and Melendez gave the Longhorns a whopping four hits, four runs, five runs batted in, and four walks.

Texas was also solid defensively in this game. While Texas A&M-Corpus Christi had two errors in this game (as many errors as the team had hits), Texas didn’t have any. As a team, Texas still only has one error on the season so far.

All in all, this win over the Islanders is big for Texas. It continues to prove the point that the Longhorns are one of the biggest forces in the entire country, hence the top ranking in essentially every major poll.
