Former Quinn Ewers coach says he has ‘generational’ arm talent
One of the most hyped-up Texas football players, that is also a new addition to the program, heading into the 2022 season is the former Ohio State Buckeyes freshman quarterback and elite five-star recruit Quinn Ewers. A one-time Texas commit, Ewers is now coming back to his home state where he looks to be favored to win the starting quarterback job right away.
Despite only taking a couple of snaps in any actual game in his one full semester in college thus far, the insane potential that Ewers brings to the table makes him an appealing enough option to win this starting job immediately. It would otherwise be difficult to convince Texas fans that head coach Steve Sarkisian could work with a returning starter such as Hudson Card or Casey Thompson in 2022.
Nonetheless, there will be a heavy emphasis this offseason placed on any progress and highlights that Ewers puts on display in drills and any spring/fall scrimmages. Some of that hype and energy is already building up from various reports and discussions around the media landscape, though.
A report from 247Sports this week details how the former coach of Ewers and Southlake Carroll High School bench boss Riley Dodge feels about the insane arm talent that his ex-quarterback brings to the table for Texas.
New Texas football QB Quinn Ewers is said to have “generational” arm talent
Here are some of the finer points that Ewers had to say in this piece from 247Sports this week.
"Dodge did not hold back on expressing how talented Ewers was for him at Southlake Carroll and probably most impressively, how he brings a “generational” type of arm talent to the Longhorns.“He’s one of the generational talents when it comes to arm strength. I think probably the one thing that’s the most impressive thing about him is how twitchy he is as a thrower,” Dodge continued."
There is clearly some real potential with Ewers quarterbacking this potent Texas offense in 2022. Having a supporting cast that now features the likes of star junior running back Bijan Robinson, sophomore wide receiver Xavier Worthy, redshirt junior Jordan Whittington, and redshirt sophomore Isaiah Neyor, makes for a borderline mouth-watering level of skill this fall.
Ewers still has a long way to go, though, before he can really take the reigns effectively for this offense. This offensive playbook that Ewers will have to learn under Sark right away presents him with a difficult task during this offseason.
And Ewers will really have to put in a lot of work just to win over the rest of this locker room in the midst of this rebuilding phase for the Longhorns in the second year under Sark.
Texas finished up last season with a record of 5-7 (3-6 Big 12) following a Black Friday win in the regular season finale over the Kansas State Wildcats. The regular season opener for Ewers and the Longhorns in 2022 is set to come against Louisiana-Monroe at home on Sep. 3.
