Texas baseball completes sweep of Alabama in 6-1 win
To complete the sweep of the Alabama Crimson Tide in this three-game weekend series, No. 1 ranked Texas baseball needed to come up with a big win on the afternoon of Feb. 27. Texas went into this Feb. 27 series finale with Alabama still looking to stay undefeated with sophomore 6-foot-5 right-hander Tanner Witt getting the call on the mound.
Coming off a close 2-0 win over the Crimson Tide to take this series on Feb. 26, momentum was on the side of head coach David Pierce, Witt, and the Longhorns in this one. And Witt wasted no time in showing why this Texas pitching staff is so dominant early this season.
Witt spun another gem for the Longhorns on the mound in this game. He gave the Longhorns six innings on the mound while allowing just one run, four hits, a measly one walk, and a career-high nine strikeouts. Witt even got five Alabama batters called out looking in this game.
This is the second win of the season now for Witt, who is one of multiple Texas starting pitchers off to a hot start.
Tanner Witt and Murphy Stehly lead No. 1 Texas baseball to 6-1 win and a series sweep of Alabama on Feb. 27
With the Bats, Texas looked much improved in this game compared to the first two in this weekend series against Alabama. In particular, the Longhorns got some big plays with the bats from the likes of designated hitter Murphy Stehly and shortstop Trey Faltine.
Stehly had a team-high three hits in this game, along with one run batted in and one stolen base. One of his three hits was a triple that knocked one run home. Stehly was on fire at the plate in this one.
Faltine had just one hit in this game, but he got on base twice. His one hit and two at-bats that got him on base resulted in two runs batted in. The single from Faltine knocked home two runs for Texas, which wound up essentially putting this game away for them.
This was definitely the most well-rounded game of this three-game weekend series for the Longhorns. Texas came up with more than a dozen hits, no errors, and six runs. The pitching staff was dominant once again, with the bullpen closing this one out with three shutouts innings. And Texas continued their solid run defensively to round out the weekend.
Sweeping the Crimson Tide just goes to show why Texas was the top-ranked college baseball team in the entire country coming into this season. Texas is now unscathed through the first eight games of the season, which has resulted in three series sweeps.
Next up for Pierce and the Longhorns after sweeping the Crimson Tide this weekend is a one-game midweek meeting with Sam Houston State on the road on March 1. Texas faces Sam Houston State before they are set to travel to Houston, TX, next weekend for an important set of games in the Shriners Hospital for Children College Classic. That event will see the Longhorns face the Tennessee Volunteers, LSU Tigers, and UCLA Bruins from March 4 to 6.
