Among the top-ranked prospects for the current cycle that is a notable target of the 2023 Texas football recruiting class is the elite five-star Allen defensive lineman David Hicks. Texas once looked to get one of the top offers that Hicks received early on in his recruitment. But that time faded pretty fast as the summer turned to fall last year.

Second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian, defensive line coach Bo Davis, and the Longhorns originally offered Hicks back on Feb. 4, 2021. So, Texas had their offer out to Hicks for more than a full calendar year now.

But it also now appears that Texas has a lot of ground to make up in the race to land a commitment from Hicks. Texas is likely behind some other top schools for Hicks at the moment such as the Texas A&M Aggies, Oklahoma Sooners, and Miami Hurricanes.

There is an opportunity that looks to be coming up for Texas to really make a positive impression on Hicks heading into the spring. According to a report from Horns247 on Feb. 28 (paid content), Texas is likely to be one of the schools that will get a visit from Hicks in the spring.

Among the other schools that reportedly look like they will get a visit from Hicks in the spring are Texas A&M, Oklahoma, and Miami. That lines up given how the recruitment of Hicks has gone of late.

The last time that Hicks visited Texas was back in the fall. He was on campus for the game weekend when the Longhorns were upset in overtime by the Kansas Jayhawks. That likely didn’t help Texas much in the eyes of Hicks. But there are still other factors that will ultimately decide where Hicks takes his talents to at the collegiate level.

It does sound like Hicks is intent on taking his time with his decision. That is likely good news for Texas given the fact that they probably still have a good amount of group to make up with him to catch up with the schools that appear to be the true frontrunners with Hicks right now.

The visit season this spring will be extremely crucial for Sark and the Longhorns staff. There is an impressive visitor list already building up for Texas in March and early April.
