Another thoroughly dominant effort helped head coach David Pierce and No. 1 ranked Texas baseball to flex their muscles in a very decisive win over the Sam Houston State Bearkats in this one-game midweek meeting between non-conference foes. Texas got the win they needed before taking on a trio of worthy opponents this coming weekend in the Shriners Hospital for Children College Classic.

On the mound in this meeting with Sam Houston State for Pierce and the Longhorns was the rising redshirt freshman right-hander Andre Duplantier II. In his second start of the season, Duplantier was great for the Longhorns.

In six innings on the mound in this game, Duplantier allowed just one earned run, one hit, two walks, and had two strikeouts. This was his second straight start of allowing one or fewer runs to start out the season.

Duplantier also got a good effort from the bullpen coming in after him. The bullpen came in with one earned run in three innings of work, with four strikeouts, and five hits allowed.

Moreover, the bats really came alive for the Longhorns in this one. Outfielders Douglas Hodo III and Skyler Messinger highlighted a 10-run effort for Texas in this win over Sam Houston State. Hodo gave the Longhorns three hits in five at-bats with two runs batted in, two runs, and one walk. He also had one stolen base in this game.

Meanwhile, Messinger also saw his bat come alive in this game with two hits in five at-bats, good for two runs batted in, two runs, and one home run. This was the first home run of the season for Messinger.

Hogo and Messinger helped to spark a Texas offense that went off for 14 hits and 10 runs. Texas did leave 10 runners on base, but their execution rate in terms of runners stranded compared to runs scored was still pretty good at 50/50.

It also helped the Longhorns that the Sam Houston State defense had three errors on the night. Meanwhile, Texas didn’t have any errors in this game. In fact, you have to go all the way back to the early stages of the weekend series with the Alabama Crimson Tide to find the last time Texas had an error.

All in all, Texas is clearly moving in the right direction right now. Following this dominant 10-2 win over Sam Houston State, Pierce and the Longhorns are sporting a record of 9-0 (0-0 Big 12). Texas also is the only remaining undefeated team in the Big 12 at this point of the season.
