It could be a really difficult feat for Texas defensive line coach Bo Davis to match his results on the recruiting trail from the 2022 signing class with his position group during the 2023 cycle. Texas had one of the strongest groups in the 2022 class along the defensive line. And Davis is a big reason for that.

But one of the bigger targets early on in the 2023 recruiting cycle for the Longhorns to start building out this defensive line class is the lofty 6-foot-3 and 380-pound Atascocita defensive lineman Samu Taumanupepe. This in-state product is one of the more recent defensive linemen on the Longhorns radar at this point of the offseason.

It was only back on Feb. 4 that Texas got a scholarship offer out to Taumanupepe. He is now up to a double-digit number of schools on his offer sheet. But Texas is doing well to try and establish an edge for them in the race to land a commitment from Taumanupepe.

According to a report from Horns247 on March 2 (paid content), Texas hosted Taumanupepe on the first day of the month. It looks like Taumanupepe was actually the first visitor among targets of the Longhorns 2023 class on campus this week since the end of the dead period for in-person contact.

That is notable that Texas got Taumanupepe as their first visiting prospect on campus after the dead period let up early this week. This proves that Texas is making him a priority to some degree. And this Horns247 report did mention that Davis and the Longhorns are forming a “strong relationship” with the Humble, TX, product, which could be a great sign of things to come.
