Colt McCoy stands firm in support of Texas HC Steve Sarkisian
Among the greatest Texas football quarterbacks in program history is the two-time All-American and former Heisman finalist Colt McCoy. The legendary Texas Ex was spotted with a fellow former star teammate of his at the final men’s basketball game at the Frank Erwin Center earlier this week in an eventual loss for the men in burnt orange at the hands of the No. 3 ranked Baylor Bears.
In the midst of his trip back to Austin this week, McCoy did get to speak on a few topics concerning the Longhorns. One that he spoke on with Bobby Burton of Inside Texas (part of the On3 Network) this week was the matter of the fan support for second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian.
It seems like McCoy is supportive of the job Sarkisian is doing as the Longhorns head coach thus far. And McCoy cautions that impatient Texas fans need to have more faith in this process for Sarkisian to right the ship for the Longhorns football program.
McCoy mentioned that he thinks that Sarkisian is “doing great” and that Texas fans need to know that this “takes time”.

To some degree, McCoy is correct. But to another, it seems like he has a lot of faith in a head coach that hasn’t proven much yet.
It is true that the Longhorns essentially need to have patience with Sark this year no matter what. He’s only in his second year at the helm as Texas’ head coach. And the recruiting and roster-building seem to be improving this offseason compared to last.
We’ll just have to be patient and see what happens on the field this fall in terms of setting expectations for Sark and his staff in 2022.
Moreover, McCoy does look to hit the nail on the head in this interview when he says that Texas fans really just need to have “a little bit of grace” to let Sark build out his roster in the mold he wants in 2022. Patience does have to win the day, even if expectations do remain high.
Texas is still working with a very young team in 2022, which is something that the fans are mostly aware of. That doesn’t mean that they won’t expect Texas to improve pretty significantly in 2022. It is not out of the question that fans reasonably will have the expectation of improvement in the win column by at least two or three marks this fall.
Last season, Texas finished up with a record of 5-7 (3-6 Big 12) following a win in the regular season finale over the Kansas State Wildcats on Black Friday. The 2022 season will open up for Sark and the Longhorns on Sep. 3 at home against the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks.
