Texas football is about to start spring ball in less than three weeks. One of the focal points of spring camp for Texas and second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian will be the looming quarterback battle between freshman Quinn Ewers and junior Hudson Card. Those are the two quarterbacks left for Texas to duke it out on the Forty Acres for the starting job in 2022.

That is due to the fact that Sark and the Longhorns lost their former starting quarterback and redshirt junior Casey Thompson to the NCAA Transfer Portal earlier in the offseason. Thompson would wind up transferring to join head coach Scott Frost and the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Big Ten.

And it looks like Thompson is already making some headway in his quest to win the starting quarterback job with Nebraska this year. The coaching staff seems to like what Thompson brings to the table for their program so far this offseason.

Considering the fact that was largely the intent for Thompson when he committed to Nebraska out of the transfer portal, this shouldn’t come as a huge surprise.

This point was largely confirmed by Nebraska’s offensive coordinator Mark Whipple in an interview he gave with Husker247 earlier in the week. He mentioned that Thompson is the “best one right now” out of all the potential options at starting quarterback for the Huskers.

Thompson came to Nebraska with the knowledge that the Huskers’ former starting quarterback, senior Adrian Martinez, was already in the transfer portal. Martinez would wind up committing to head coach Chris Klieman and the Kansas State Wildcats in the Big 12 earlier in the offseason. That officially opened the door for Thompson to be the clear favorite to win the starting job in Lincoln.

It will be interesting to see how Thompson does at Nebraska compared with Martinez with Kansas State this fall. It could also be interesting to see how Thompson’s performance this fall compares to the likes of Ewers if he beats out Card for the starting job with the Longhorns.

Thompson put up some solid numbers with the Longhorns in 2021. He registered 2,100 passing yards, 28 total touchdowns, and nine interceptions in his first year as the usual starting quarterback for Texas.
