Hudson Card, QB

This is the name on transfer watch that pretty much everyone Longhorns fan will be watching throughout the offseason. Rising junior quarterback Hudson Card could be battling to even maintain his status as the backup this offseason depending on how this situation plays out in spring and fall camp.

Card will be battling it out with the former Ohio State Buckeyes freshman transfer quarterback and elite five-star recruit Quinn Ewers for the starting job entering spring camp. And if that doesn’t go as planned for Card, he could soon be battling it out with the likes of the incoming four-star quarterback signee Maalik Murphy for the backup role.

But the early indications are that Card is giving a huge effort to lay everything on the line to win the starting job entering the fall. If Card doesn’t put up a good fight now, it’s hard to see him ever maintaining a significant spot in this quarterback room again.

If there is a situation where Card can’t even maintain the backup role behind Ewers, it’s hard to see a world where he wants to stick around on the Forty Acres. He could end up like redshirt junior quarterback Casey Thompson and take to the transfer portal route to find a program where he can be the starter right away.

Card sounds like he is getting the treatment as the co-starter entering spring ball along with Ewers. Sark and the Longhorns staff are going to turn this into a true quarterback battle between these two since Card is the only one with real game experience under his belt in this QB room.
