Texas baseball looks to knock off red-hot No. 7 LSU
After a huge win for head coach David Pierce and No. 1 ranked Texas baseball over the No. 17 ranked Tennessee Volunteers to start off the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic this weekend, this team looks ready for its biggest battle of this series. Texas is set to take on the No. 7 ranked and one-loss LSU Tigers in the second game of this weekend event in Houston, TX.
Pierce saw his Longhorns team look really good in an impressive 7-2 win over Tennessee behind a solid effort from standout redshirt sophomore Pete Hansen on the mound. Texas got another well-rounded effort from their team to stay undefeated and reach double-digit wins early this season in their March 4 win over the Vols.
Texas will need to parlay that momentum from their March 4 win over the Vols in Houston as they get set to take on LSU in the second game of the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic on the night of March 5.
LSU got off to a strong start themselves in this weekend series. The Tigers moved their record on the season so far to 9-1 (0-0 SEC West) by taking care of business against the Oklahoma Sooners in extra innings by the final score of 5-4 on March 4.
Tristan Stevens looking to get No. 1 Texas baseball to 11 wins vs. No. 7 LSU
After that win over the Sooners this weekend, LSU has also won six straight games. Their lone loss on the season came at the hands of the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs back on Feb. 23.
Texas and LSU usually makes for one of the more interesting matchups around the college baseball landscape. These are two of the top programs in the entire country and are truly two of the best teams this season.
On the mound for Pierce and the Longhorns in this game is the redshirt senior right-hander Tristan Stevens. As was the case with Hansen heading into this weekend event, Stevens boasts a record of 2-0 without any earned runs on the season so far.
Yet, Hansen did have his scoreless streak snapped in the March 4 win over the Vols after giving up one earned in five innings on the mound.
All in all, if Texas can get a similar performance from Stevens against LSU, it’s going to be tough for the Tigers to pull this one out. And the fact that the Longhorns bats are hot heading into this game could mean an even tougher test for LSU.
The first pitch between Texas and LSU on March 5 in Houston is set for 7 p.m. CT. After this game concludes between the Longhorns and Tigers, the final game of the weekend event for Texas will come against the UCLA Bruins on March 6, with first pitch set for 3 p.m. CT.
