Head coach David Pierce and No. 1 ranked Texas baseball had maybe their biggest statement win of the season so far against the No. 7 ranked LSU Tigers in the second of three games in the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic on the night of March 5. Texas had their biggest test of the season to date against LSU on March 5 in Houston, TX.

Pierce and the Longhorns had redshirt senior Tristan Stevens on the mound on March 5 against the Tigers. And Stevens continued to shine in his third start of the season.

Stevens shut out the Tigers in seven innings on the mound with just five hits allowed, no walks, and seven strikeouts. This kept the shutout streak going through three games this season for Stevens. He is truly off to an astounding start.

Coming on in relief of Stevens to close things out in this game was Andre Duplantier II and Luke Harrison. Getting his second save of the season so far, Harrison gave the Longhorns one and one-third shutout innings on the mound to close out the win.

With the bats, the Longhorns were led by outfielder Douglas Hodo III with two hits in four at-bats. More specifically, Hodo III had one home run, two runs, three runs batted in, and one walk. Of the six runs the Longhorns scored in this game, four were either scored by Hodo III or knocked in.

Hodo III helped Texas really bust this game open in the second inning, where the Longhorns scored four runs.

Moreover, the only time the Longhorns pitching staff let up was in the bottom of the eighth, where LSU would score their only run of the game. LSU did come up with eight hits, the same number as Texas, but couldn’t convert on those runners on base. LSU would wind up leaving a dozen runners on base compared to just five for Texas.

After a solid pitching performance yet again from Stevens, the Longhorns came away with this impressive win over LSU by the final score of 6-1. This was the second consecutive win by at least five runs for the Longhorns over a ranked SEC opponent to start off this weekend classic series in Houston.

Texas is also a perfect 5-0 against the SEC to start off this season. They’ve now topped LSU, Tennessee, and swept the Alabama Crimson Tide to close out last month.
