In the first game of the postseason for first-year head coach Chris Beard and the Texas basketball program, head coach Jamie Dixon and the TCU Horned Frogs loom large on March 10 to start off the Big 12 Tournament. The four-seed Texas will be looking to win their third game of the season if they can take down a five-seed TCU team that is heating up at a good time for them.

Beard and the Longhorns currently hold a record of 2-0 on the season so far against the Horned Frogs.

Texas comes into this first-round meeting with TCU sporting a record of 21-10 (10-8 Big 12) following their March 5 loss to head coach Bill Self and the No. 6 ranked Kansas Jayhawks in overtime. Texas has two straight losses heading into their first game of the Big 12 Tournament.

Meanwhile, TCU comes into this first game of their run in the Big 12 Tournament with a record of 19-11 (8-10 Big 12) following their 70-64 loss to the West Virginia Mountaineers on March 5. TCU is also riding a two-game losing streak heading into this one. But one loss in that two-game streak for the Horned Frogs came in narrow fashion to Kansas last week.

TCU almost pulled off a regular season sweep of the Jayhawks in the span of just roughly 72 hours.

Here’s a look into the betting odds, TV/streaming information, and game prediction as Texas faces TCU in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament on March 10, with tip-off time set for 11:30 a.m. CT.

Texas basketball vs. TCU prediction

This is an opportunity for Beard and the Longhorns to really bolster their resume heading into Selection Sunday. But there is also a lot on the line for Texas to be able to capture the Big 12 Tournament crown for the second year in a row.

Former Texas head coach Shaka Smart was able to get the Longhorns Big 12 Tournament crown last year. But that obviously ended in disappointment in the Big Dance.

The job will now be for Beard and the Longhorns to channel all the senior leaders on this roster to really inject some energy into this team heading into the Big 12 Tournament. That should namely see senior guard Marcus Carr and senior forward Timmy Allen step up in the spotlight this week.

Carr was solid for the Longhorns in their first two games of the season against TCU. He averaged 15 points per game in the first two outings this season between these two teams. And when Carr is hot offensively, Texas tends to be performing well.

Meanwhile, Allen is looking to rebound after a tough game in the overtime loss to Kansas last weekend. He shot just 2-of-15 from the field while not scoring in the double figures for the first time in the Longhorns’ Feb. 19 loss to the Texas Tech Red Raiders. This would be a great time for him to step up in a big way.

Texas can likely ensure that they will be at least a five-seed on Selection Sunday (depending on what happens in other conference tournaments around the country) if they can get a convincing win over TCU. That could also present a situation for the Longhorns where they could face Kansas in their second game of the Big 12 Tournament this weekend.

Final score prediction: Texas-72, TCU-65
