Texas baseball set to miss Tanner Witt for rest of the season
The first really unfortunate injury news of the 2022 season arrived for head coach David Pierce and No. 1 ranked Texas baseball on the morning of March 10. Texas reportedly announced on March 10 that they will be missing the 6-foot-5 215-pound sophomore right-handed pitcher Tanner Witt.
Multiple sources confirmed that Pierce and the Longhorns announced that Witt will miss the rest of the season after he gets Tommy John surgery. Witt reportedly suffered a UCL injury as the cause for him to miss the rest of the season.
As one of the best pitchers on a loaded Longhorns staff, losing Witt will hurt for the remainder of the season. Witt is a really important part of this pitching staff, and he has a bright future ahead.
Texas baseball set to lose Tanner Witt for the season due to a UCL injury
While it is good that the Longhorns have plenty of depth in this talented pitching staff to stave off too much detriment from the news of the season-ending injury to Witt, this is going to hurt.
Over the last couple of seasons, Witt was one of the most consistent and dominant pitchers in this staff. He finished up last season with a record of 5-0 in 28 appearances with five saves, a 3.16 earned run average, and 73 strikeouts through 57 innings pitched.
Witt got off to a solid start this season too through a couple of appearances in wins over the Alabama Crimson Tide and Rice Owls. He posted a 2-0 record in two starts to start off this season, with a 1.64 ERA.
The injury news to Witt will likely lead to bigger roles in the starting rotation for the likes of Andre Duplantier II and Lucas Gordon. This duo is plenty capable of effectively filling the void left by Witt. But the consistency that Witt brought to the table is the aspect that will be difficult to come up with for Pierce and the Longhorns for the rest of the season.
Texas is currently sitting with a record of 12-2 (0-0 Big 12) following a tough two-run loss to the Texas State Bobcats at home on March 9. Next up for the Longhorns is a three-game weekend series with the South Carolina Gamecocks out of the SEC East on the road starting on March 11.
