Following one of the most tragic losses of the season for first-year head coach Chris Beard and No. 21 ranked Texas basketball to end their run early in the Big 12 Tournament, this team is reeling heading into Selection Sunday. Texas now awaits their fate for seeding in the NCAA Tournament. But the good news here is that it doesn’t appear they will slide all that far in the seeding.

Heading into the Big 12 Tournament, it felt like the ceiling for Beard and the Longhorns was likely the lowest of the four seeds. Texas might not actually be falling that far down the seeding following their early exit from the Big 12 Tournament on March 10.

The latest Bracketology projections from On3 following the first full round of games in the Big 12 Tournament still slots Texas as potentially the highest-ranked of the six seeds on Selection Sunday. Those March 11 Selection Sunday projections do present some sort of good news for the Longhorns heading into the weekend.

Yet, there is still the very sour taste left for Longhorns’ fans following the tough loss to head coach Jamie Dixon and the TCU Horned Frogs on March 10 where the team absolutely collapsed in the second half. Texas saw an 18-point second-half lead disappear in about 15 minutes of game time.

Texas basketball still projected as a six-seed for the NCAA Tournament despite the early exit in the Big 12 Tournament

That lead for the Longhorns that was once 40-22 at the half would turn into a collapse in the second half and a final score of 65-60 in favor of the Horned Frogs.

It will now be up to Beard and his staff to get this team right ahead of the NCAA Tournament. Texas is now riding a three-game losing streak heading into the NCAA Tournament, which is not necessarily where you want this team to be.

If nothing else, though, Beard and the Longhorns have their shot at redemption in the NCAA Tournament. It is more important to the Longhorns faithful that this team find success in the Big Dance than in the Big 12 Tournament.

Following the loss to the Horned Frogs on March 10, Texas is now sporting a record of 21-11 (10-8 Big 12) heading into Selection Sunday. It will be interesting to see where the Longhorns are seeded for the NCAA Tournament come next week.
