One of the biggest trades so far during the NFL offseason could now see the former Texas football star quarterback Sam Ehlinger challenging for the starting job with the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts parted ways with the former North Dakota State Bison quarterback Carson Wentz in a big splash trade with the Washington Commanders last week.

Wentz was dealt from Indy along with a 2022 second-round draft pick and a seventh-round draft pick to the Commanders for a return that included a second-round pick and a third-round pick this year along with a conditional draft pick in 2023.

That seemed like a good move for the Colts, hinging on one condition. And that condition is whether Chris Ballard and the Colts have another option in mind as to who their starting quarterback will be in 2022 and beyond.

Former Texas football star Sam Ehlinger looks like QB1 right now for the Colts

It looks like there’s a chance that Ehlinger could be the starting quarterback for the Colts in 2022 if they don’t make any moves on the trade block, free agent market, or in the 2022 NFL Draft. Even if the Colts do draft a quarterback this year, head coach Frank Reich would likely open up a competition in Training Camp that could still favor Ehlinger.

Nonetheless, the talk of the town in Indy right now surrounds the potential options for the Colts’ starting quarterback job this year after the departure of Wentz. Ehlinger is definitely one option here. But who are the other names to watch that could keep Ehlinger potentially in the backup job this year?

Here’s a look at Ehlinger and four other potential starting quarterback options for the Colts that could fit well after Indy traded Wentz to Washington.
