Desmond Ridder

While the Colts don’t hold a first-round draft pick this year, there are still some quarterbacks to watch on day two that the front office could try and scoop up. Some names worth watching for the Colts to pick in the second round at the quarterback position include North Carolina’s Sam Howell, Ole Miss’s Matt Corral, and Cincinnati’s Desmond Ridder.

The Colts do hold a mid-second-round draft pick from the Wentz trade with the Commanders. They could try and use that pick on some potential quarterbacks that could be left on the board such as Howell and/or Ridder. I don’t personally believe that other top quarterback prospects such as Liberty’s Malik Willis and/or Pitt’s Kenny Pickett will be left on the board by the middle of the second round.

Moreover, if the Colts are looking to find a quarterback that could compete for the starting job right away, Ridder could be a nice fit. The Colts could still have that dual-threat presence behind center with Ridder, and he’s got the arm to thrive with a developing receiving corps.

The Colts could have a very potent ground game and just a really difficult offense to prepare for if you had the duo of Ridder and superstar running back Jonathan Taylor in the backfield in 2022.

There is still the issue, though, that Ridder could need some development at the next level before he is truly ready to be a starting quarterback for a potential playoff contender such as the Colts. It is still a sizable risk for the Colts to take if they opened up the quarterback competition with Ehlinger and Ridder this offseason.
