Final ESPN Bracketology downgrades Texas basketball to 6-seed
We have arrived at Selection Sunday, which is a day that Texas basketball fans are hoping will give their team some good fortune after an early exit in the Big 12 Tournament earlier in the week. Texas and first-year head coach Chris Beard fell short at the hands of head coach Jamie Dixon and the TCU Horned Frogs in their first game in the Big 12 Tournament back on March 10.
Beard and the Longhorns looked to have the opportunity to solidify a five or four-seed if they could really challenge to defend their Big 12 Tournament crown this weekend. But that was obviously not the case as the Longhorns experienced one of the biggest collapses in the history of the Big 12 Tournament back on March 10 to fall short to TCU by the final score of 65-60.
At one point in that game, Texas held a 20-point lead over the Horned Frogs. But a complete second-half collapse caused the Longhorns to have an early exit from the Big 12 Tournament while the five-seed Horned Frogs advanced to face the top-seeded Kansas Jayhawks and head coach Bill Self.

Moreover, with Selection Sunday upon us, Texas fans are hoping to see their team get favorable seeding for the Big Dance. And the final round of ESPN Bracketology from Joe Lunardi on the morning of March 13 could provide some insight as to where the Longhorns will be seeded on Selection Sunday.
The most recent edition of ESPN’s Bracketology from Lunardi projected Texas as a six-seed on Selection Sunday, which would slot them to face the 11-seed Miami Hurricanes out of the ACC in the Round of 64. This matchup projection for Beard and the Longhorns in the Round of 64 puts them in the Midwest (Chicago) Region. That would also mean that Texas starts off the NCAA Tournament by playing their games in Milwaukee, WI.
In the pre-conference tournament title game Bracketology from ESPN’s Lunardi on March 12, the Longhorns were projected as a five-seed for Selection Sunday. Thus, ESPN slid Texas down one spot in the seeding ahead of the festivities on March 13.
Texas heads into Selection Sunday sporting a record of 21-11 (10-8 Big 12) following their upset loss to the Horned Frogs in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament on March 10. If Texas can get a win in the Round of 64 this year, it would be the program’s first since 2014.
