Texas Basketball: 3 likely Tournament opponents on Selection Sunday
A few hours ahead of the start of Selection Sunday on March 13 for first-year head coach Chris Beard and the No. 21 ranked Texas basketball program, the fans on the Forty Acres are awaiting a hopefully favorable seeding for the NCAA Tournament. Granted, Texas definitely isn’t trending up heading into Selection Sunday (beginning on the evening of March 13).
Beard and the five-seed Longhorns fell short to head coach Jamie Dixon and the five-seed TCU Horned Frogs to exit the Big 12 Tournament early in their first game of the festivities in Kansas City, MO, back on March 10. Texas was upset by TCU in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament back on the afternoon of March 10 by the final score of 65-60.
Moreover, Texas comes into Selection Sunday sporting a record of 21-11 (10-8 Big 12). Texas is also riding a three-game losing streak ahead of the Big Dance next week.
Who Chris Beard and Texas basketball could draw for the Round of 64 on Selection Sunday?
Texas will also be looking to get their first NCAA Tournament win since 2014. Since their Round of 64 win in the 2014 postseason, the Longhorns are riding a four-game losing streak in the NCAA Tournament.
But this is why the Longhorns brought the former Texas Tech Red Raiders head coach Beard in to replace the now-first-year Marquette Golden Eagles head coach Shaka Smart to lead this program in the right direction in the postseason. Beard has plenty of NCAA Tournament success under his belt from his time in Lubbock.
Texas fans are hoping some of that success Beard found with the Red Raiders in the last half-decade or so will rub off on the Longhorns this year. This will all start with the seeding for the Longhorns on Selection Sunday, though.
With that in mind, here’s a look into three likely opponents that Beard and the Longhorns could get matched up with in the Round of 64 on Selection Sunday.
