Quinn Ewers, QB

The one player that all Texas fans are chomping at the bit to see in action this offseason is the former Ohio State Buckeyes freshman transfer quarterback Quinn Ewers. As one of the first and most notable of the additions for the Longhorns out of the transfer portal so far this offseason, the excitement surrounding Ewers’ presence on campus is warranted.

This former Texas commit and elite five-star recruit is likely going to be the heavy favorite to win the starting quarterback job this year over rising junior Hudson Card. While Sark and his staff are going to start off spring ball by splitting the first-team quarterback reps between Ewers and Card, this job should be Quinn’s to lose.

There would be something wrong if Ewers wasn’t the Week 1 starting quarterback this year, barring any unforeseen injuries. But Ewers is still going to have to prove himself from the start of spring drills in order to effectively take control of this offense.

Proving his value this offseason is something that Ewers must do mainly to effectively take the reins of this offense, not necessarily just to win the starting job. For Texas to even come close to reaching its potential in 2022, Ewers will have to prove that he can help this offense reach new levels of explosiveness and efficiency from the get-go.

Sark’s offensive playbook and philosophy will be a lot for Ewers to take in this offseason. And that’s why it’s so critical for him to come in and show confidence in spring ball. If he can get this offense to rally around him and start making some strides in spring practice, then the results this fall should come in due time.
