Colt McCoy earns two-year contract extension with the Cardinals
With free agency now in full swing, the Arizona Cardinals wasted no time getting the former Texas football star quarterback Colt McCoy signed down to a contract extension. McCoy was signed down to a two-year contract extension this week with the Cardinals reportedly worth a total of around $7.5 million. But just $6 million of that is reportedly going to be guaranteed for McCoy over the course of these two years.
Moreover, it’s good to see McCoy getting rewarded for the solid job he’s done as the Cardinals’ backup of late.
The NFL veteran of a dozen years now is still seeing it through for at least a couple more seasons. Arizona is the fifth team that McCoy has actually played for since entering the league in 2010.
Former Texas football star Colt McCoy to remain the Cardinals’ backup QB
Up to this point of his career, McCoy spent most of his time with the Washington Commanders (five seasons) and Cleveland Browns (three seasons). But it looks like the Cardinals will now be the third team that McCoy played in multiple seasons with in his NFL career to date.
Last season with the Cardinals, McCoy got to play in eight games (three of which he started in). And in his three starts, McCoy put up a solid record of 2-1-0.
The 2021 campaign as a whole was considered a success for McCoy. He had a solid season putting up nearly 750 passing yards, three passing touchdowns, just one pick, and a completion percentage around 75. Last season saw McCoy post the best completion percentage and QBR (54.5) of his career thus far.
Moreover, it looks like the former Oklahoma Sooners Heisman-winning quarterback Kyler Murray will be getting another year of mentorship with McCoy also present in the QB room for the Cardinals. This does look to be an advantageous situation for Murray and the Cardinals as a whole, though, with McCoy as the backup quarterback.
McCoy led the Cardinals to a winning record in his three starts last season. He’s also a valuable mentor for Murray, who is still in the early stages of his NFL career. And McCoy actually just had likely the most efficient season of his career that now spans more than a decade long.
McCoy now has 33 starts and 52 total games played in his NFL career to date. He’s registered a record of 10-23-0 in those 33 starts to go along with nearly 7,200 passing yards, 33 passing touchdowns, 29 interceptions, and nearly 550 rushing yards and two rushing scores.
