5-Star Texas basketball F Dillon Mitchell selected for Jordan Brand Classic
While the Texas basketball program is gearing up to face the 11-seed and reigning ACC Tournament Champion Virginia Tech Hokies in the Round of 64 on March 18, there is still some news worth noting on the recruiting trail too. First-year head coach Chris Beard is set to see at least one of his blue-chip signees in the 2022 recruiting class compete in some of the bigger showcases of the high school basketball offseason this year.
Texas’ elite five-star signee and Montverde Academy forward Dillon Mitchell was named as a participant in the Jordan Brand Classic this year. He was the lone signee in the Longhorns 2022 class that was named a participant in the Jordan Brand Classic too.
Mitchell will be the first Longhorns signee to play in the Jordan Brand Classic on the men’s side since point guard Matt Coleman and big man Mohamed Bamba did back in 2017. Another one of the more recent participants in the Jordan Brand Classic for the Longhorns was the current redshirt senior shooting guard/wing and former elite five-star recruit Andrew Jones.

Some of the other notable Longhorns stars to participate in the Jordan Brand Classic in the last couple of decades are forward Kevin Durant, big man Tristan Thompson, guard Avery Bradley, and power forward LaMarcus Aldridge, among many others.
And the Texas women’s basketball program is set to see a signee of their own participate in the Jordan Brand Classic this year. Ndjakalenga Mwenentanda is set to participate for the Longhorns women’s basketball team in the Jordan Brand Classic too.
It’s good to see some of the more highly touted Texas signees get to participate in a showcase as prestigious as the Jordan Brand Classic. This will let Mitchell get to go up against some of the top high school players in the entire country before he starts competing on the Forty Acres.
The same could be said for Mitchell when he competes in the McDonald’s All-America Game later this year. Mitchell is getting to participate in multiple prestigious showcase games this year.
Texas signed one of the very best 2022 recruiting classes in the Big 12 and in the country. Mitchell was one of two five-star signees in the 2022 class along with the Dallas point guard Arterio Morris. According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2022 Texas recruiting class ranks at No. 10 in the nation and in the second spot in the Big 12 behind the Kansas Jayhawks.
