Texas Football: Two-deep offensive depth chart for spring
Quarterback
Starter: Quinn Ewers
Backup: Hudson Card
Pretty much every Longhorns fan will be watching what happens in spring ball as Sark and his staff looks to split the first-team reps in practice between the former Ohio State Buckeyes freshman transfer Quinn Ewers and rising junior Hudson Card. Ewers should be the clear favorite to win the starting job this year, but that likely won’t stop Sark and quarterbacks coach AJ Milwee from splitting the first-team reps in spring practice.
It does look like something will have to be very wrong entering the fall if Ewers is not the starting quarterback. But it is still important for Card to give Ewers a run for his money in spring camp. It would be very nice for the Longhorns to have a backup quarterback with starting experience they could rely on behind Ewers this fall.
Card still has more reps under his belt in game action from last season. Ewers only has a couple of snaps under his belt from one drive he spent on the field with Ohio State last season in a dominant win over the Michigan State Spartans.
Moreover, Texas still has the former three-star recruit and sophomore Charles Wright hanging around in the quarterback room. He’ll be looking to make some progress up the depth chart this offseason.
But most Texas fans will also be interested to see what the incoming freshman and four-star recruit Maalik Murphy is able to do in camp this offseason. Murphy is going to be a key cog in this quarterback room for years to come. And it wouldn’t be surprising to see him challenge for the starting job as soon as 2023 or 2024.
