CBS Sports lists Texas’ QB competition as a ‘must watch’ in spring
With second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program now just a couple of days away from the start of spring ball, this fan base is starting to gear up to watch a number of position battles in the weeks ahead. Texas has multiple position battles worth watching in spring ball on both sides of the ball.
But the one that seems to be commanding the headlines, despite the projected starter seeming like a pretty heavy favorite to win the job by the fall, is the looming quarterback competition. Sark and the Longhorns are pitting the former Ohio State Buckeyes freshman transfer quarterback Quinn Ewers against the rising junior Hudson Card in the QB battle this spring.
Granted, it does look like Ewers should be the starter this fall if everything goes according to plan.
Yet, Texas is going to split the first-team reps in spring camp between Ewers and Card. That was a plan that looked to be set for Sark and quarterbacks coach AJ Milwee since the conclusion of winter workouts.
Texas football has a QB competition “you need to follow” between Hudson Card and Quinn Ewers
And this looming quarterback battle between Ewers and Card is one that CBS Sports recently named one of their seven that “you need to follow” in spring camp around the college football landscape.
Here’s a bit on what CBS Sports had to say on the matter of the looming quarterback competition between Ewers and Card.
"The 6-foot-3, 206-pound Ewers rated as the No. 1 high school recruit, according to the 247Sports Composite, and that blue-chip status has many fans handing him the honors of QB1 already. But Card has indicated he’s up for the challenge of going head-to-head against the touted new arrival and his one year of experience in Sarkisian’s offense could prove to be valuable in the competition."
It sounds like CBS has a similar take on the matter of the looming Texas quarterback battle as most in the college football media landscape. The tone here is essentially that Ewers and the Longhorns are likely to see Card put up a tough battle for the starting job. And that makes a lot of sense.
But something will likely have to be really wrong if Ewers is not named the Week 1 starting quarterback this fall.
This will still be interesting to see how Ewers responds to the looming quarterback competition against Card in spring ball. Ewers doesn’t really have that many game snaps under his belt. And Card is the only returning quarterback on the Longhorns spring roster that has any game experience in his collegiate career.
Texas is set to begin spring drills on March 22, with the spring football game set to take place at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on April 23. And then, the regular season opener for the Longhorns is set for Sep. 3 at home at DKR against Louisiana-Monroe.
