On the afternoon of March 20, No. 2 ranked Texas baseball and head coach David Pierce will be looking for the sweep of an opponent that came into this three-game weekend series on the Forty Acres with a hot offense. The Incarnate Word Cardinals are now one game away from leaving UFCU Disch-Falk Field without a single win.

Pierce and the Longhorns have absolutely dominated the Cardinals in the first two games of this weekend series in Austin. On March 18, Texas saw their bats continue to come alive with a 19-2 dismantling of Incarnate Word. That was the second straight game for the Longhorns scoring at least 18 runs.

And the Longhorns kept their streak rolling on the afternoon of March 19 in terms of the offensive explosion and the improved pitching. Texas beat UIW on March 19 by a convincing final score of 10-2.

Since the third inning of the Longhorns’ win over The Citadel earlier in the week, Texas has scored 47 runs while only allowing five earned runs and committing just one error. That is an insane run over the course of fewer than three games.

Moreover, Texas will look to continue their hot streak with the 6-foot-1 sophomore left-hander Lucas Gordon getting the call on the mound for his sixth appearance of the season. In his five appearances so far this season, Gordon has a record of 0-1 with a 2.35 earned run average.

Yet, the last start for Gordon didn’t go as planned. He gave up three earned runs in just 3.1 innings on the mound in a loss to the South Carolina Gamecocks last weekend. That was the first loss of the season for Gordon.

If Texas can beat Incarnate Word on March 20, it would be their fourth win in a row. It would also be the fourth clean series sweep of the season so far for the Longhorns (including series with at least two games).

Texas carries a record of 16-5 (0-0 Big 12) into this series finale against Incarnate Word. The first pitch between Texas and Incarnate Word at the Disch on March 20 is set for 1 p.m. CT.

Once this three-game weekend series against the Cardinals concludes, the next opponent up for Pierce and the Longhorns is the Central Arkansas Bears in a one-game midweek series at home on March 22.
