Texas baseball obliterates UIW thanks to outburst from Murphy Stehli
Head coach David Pierce and No. 2 ranked Texas baseball continues their huge response to the first real losing streak of the season from earlier in the week. Texas took a lot of their frustrations out in a dominant showing in this three-game weekend series at home at UFCU Disch-Falk Field against the Incarnate Word Cardinals.
With the sophomore left-hander Lucas Gordon putting together a masterful performance as the starter for Texas in this one, the bats didn’t need to do much to put down Incarnate Word. Texas got seven shutout innings on the mound from Gordon that really gave this team the edge given yet another offensive outburst to cap the weekend.
Gordon also gave Texas four strikeouts, just four hits allowed, and no walks allowed. Gordon was truly on point in this game.
With the bats, Texas was led by the heart of the order. And the efforts with the bats were spearheaded by an insane performance from Murphy Stehly. With his first three-home run performance of his career, Stehly really sparked Texas to put up the dozen runs they did on March 20 against UIW.
Texas baseball downs UIW 12-0 thanks to a shutout from Lucas Gordon and three homers from Murphy Stehly
Stehly had three home runs on the afternoon, four runs batted in, and one walk.
Texas also got big offensive performances on the afternoon from the likes of Eric Kennedy, Douglas Hodo III, Trey Faltine, and Skyler Messinger. Those four combined for 11 hits, five runs batted in, and six runs scored.
The heart of the order for the Longhorns wreaked havoc on UIW’s starting pitcher Isaiah Zavala. In just 3.1 innings on the mound, Zavala would give up a season-high nine earned runs, with no strikeouts, and nine hits allowed.
Zavala gave up nine of the 12 earned runs for the Cardinals on the day. Texas also got nine of their 16 hits in this game on Zavala.
You have to give props to the likes of Gordon and Stehly in this game for doing what needed to be done to get this dominant three-game weekend series sweep of the Cardinals at home. Texas now has plenty of momentum heading into their final game before Big 12 play begins.
Texas downed UIW in this three-game weekend series by the combined score of 41-4, which is just absolutely insane.
Following their dominant 12-0 win over UIW on March 20, the Longhorns are now sporting a record of 17-5 (0-0 Big 12) while riding a four-game winning streak. Next up for the Longhorns is a one-game midweek series with the Central Arkansas Bears at home at the Disch on March 22.
