Ahead of their meeting with the three-seed Purdue Boilermakers in the Round of 32 in the East Region on March 20, first-year head coach Chris Beard and the six-seed Texas basketball must be prepared for what’s to come. Texas has one of their most difficult opponents on the season ahead with Purdue set to challenge them on the night of March 20.

It looks like Beard has plenty of confidence in the key players on his team, though, ahead of this Round of 32 matchup against Purdue. And one of those key players for Beard and the Longhorns in this game is the former Utah Utes two-time All-PAC-12 senior forward transfer, Timmy Allen.

Texas has one of their best and most consistent producers so far this season in Allen. And that is something that Beard continued to recognize all season long. Beard gave more recognition to Allen in a press conference prior to the Round of 32 matchup against the Boilermakers.

Texas basketball HC Chris Beard speaks highly of Timmy Allen

Beard talked on the matter of Allen and what it means to the Longhorns that he landed with this team out of the NCAA Transfer Portal last offseason. He even said at one point that Allen was “everything we were looking for” last offseason out of the portal.

That is some lofty praise from Beard to Allen, but it also feels pretty well-deserved after the type of season that he had as one of the Longhorns’ senior leaders. Allen is definitely one of the go-to players on this team.

Moreover, from the very start of Beard’s recruitment of Allen out of the transfer portal last offseason, it looked like these two had a special connection. It looks like that Allen buys into what Beard is trying to do with this Longhorns basketball program. And Beard looks like he respects the character and skill set that Allen brings to the table day in and day out for Texas.

Allen is currently having one of the best seasons of his collegiate career. He registered a career-best 4.8 win shares and 8.3 box plus/minus so far this season en route to getting his third-career all-conference team honors.
