Former Texas QB Garrett Gilbert signs with Las Vegas Raiders
The hottest storyline around the football landscape right now, college or pro, is what continues to transpire in NFL free agency and on the trade block, including one former Texas football quarterback and five-star recruit. Former Texas and SMU Mustangs quarterback Garrett Gilbert just signed his next deal to keep competing for a backup job heading into the 2022 season.
On March 21, the Las Vegas Raiders signed Gilbert off the free agent market.
This will be Gilbert’s second stint with the Raiders, but the first since they moved from Oakland to Las Vegas. Gilbert was first a part of the Raiders on their practice squad in 2015 and 2016. He remained with the Raiders until he was cut during the 2016 offseason.

His stint with the Raiders was one of nearly 10 different teams he was signed to at this point of his NFL career.
Granted, it’s impressive to see the longevity that Gilbert continues to have in a pro football career that has now spanned for nearly a decade.
Gilbert spent last season with the Washington Commanders, getting the second start of his career in the process. In his lone season with Washington, Gilbert registered 194 passing yards, no passing touchdowns, no interceptions, a 39.6 QBR, and eight first downs.
The first start of Gilbert’s NFL career came back during the 2020 season with the Dallas Cowboys. That was also the only game he appeared in during the 2020 campaign. He registered nearly 250 passing yards, one passing touchdown, and one interception in his lone appearance in 2020 with the Cowboys.
Moreover, the two other teams that Gilbert has made at least one regular season appearance with up to this point of his NFL career were the Cleveland Browns (2019) and Carolina Panthers (2018). He made his first career appearance in an NFL regular season game with the Panthers in 2018.
Gilbert will be joining a Raiders squad that finished up last season with a record of 10-7, good for second in the AFC West. He’ll now be looking to win the backup job for the Raiders behind the former Fresno State Bulldogs star quarterback Derek Carr in 2022.
