The first day of spring practice arrived for second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football on the morning of March 22. And with that came the start of a looming quarterback battle that might not have an announced starter until the fall. At least that’s what looks to be the plan for Sark and his coaching staff.

Sark and the Longhorns are pitting the former Ohio State Buckeyes freshman transfer quarterback Quinn Ewers against rising junior Hudson Card. And it looks like Card initially got the first-team reps on the first day of spring practice on March 22 ahead of Ewers.

But that all seemingly played out with Ewers and Card splitting the first-team reps to round out the first day of drills.

Ewers apparently had a pretty solid first day from what the media say, though. A report from Orangebloods (paid content) on March 22 indicated that Ewers was on point with pretty much all the passes they saw from him. Ewers reportedly made “every pass” look pretty “effortless” on his first day of actual practice reps on the Forty Acres this offseason.

Texas football sees a great passing day from QB Quinn Ewers in first spring practice

Word coming from Ewers’ first day gives the indication that he is settling in pretty nicely with this offense so far in the spring.

If that continues to be the case, then it might not be too long before Ewers’ momentum starts to push him well ahead of Card in this quarterback competition.

Many Texas fans already feel that the first year for Ewers in Austin would have to go really wrong for him to not win the starting job Week 1. That has some truth to it as you don’t get Ewers out of the transfer portal without intending on him becoming the starting quarterback right away.

All in all, this shouldn’t surprise many that Ewers looked really good on his first day of practice reps. The arm talent that Ewers brings to the table is why he had so much hype as the nation’s top high school prospect coming out of Southlake Carroll a couple of recruiting cycles ago.

But his ability to hit these short passes in practice where the players still don’t even have shoulder pads on yet should obviously be taken with a grain of salt. We’ll start to get out first indications of how Ewers will turn out this fall when full-pads practices and scrimmages start to take place starting next weekend.
